Well....huh....
They're doing something different at least.
Whelp. That's what happens when you think Pokemon + Nobunaga's ambition was as strange as it'd get.
If it's a direct sequel to the story, though... that'd be freaking awesome.
(Sorry, I'm new here, hello everybody.)
...All I can say is...
...What is this, I don't even...
... Okay, let me try putting some thoughts together...
So instead of a 3rd version, GameFreak have decided to keep to the Yin/Yang concept and instead are releasing... updated versions? Remakes? Sequels?... of the paired games: Pokemon Black 2 and Pokemon White 2 (and that isn't only the Japanese titles, the U.S. Pokemon website has also updated with this surprise and the title of the games are the same here... you know, you could have titled them Pokemon Deep Black and Pokemon Vast White (you know, like the species name of the mascot legendaries!)). Speaking of mascot legendaries, as predicted Kyurem is the mascot and also predicted it's getting another Forme (with an "e")... two infact. That's right, we're gonna keep beating the Yin/Yang concept like a dead horse and Kyurem new forms looks like it did a fusion dance with either Zekrom or Reshiram... but took a misstep (for those who don't know what I'm talking about, the "Fusion Dance" is something in the anime "Dragon Ball Z" where two characters perform a specific dance that'll fuse them into a stronger being for a short while (I think it's an hour before they're forced to de-fuse). However you have to do the dance perfectly, if even one of the characters doing the dance makes a slight mistake the fusion will be botched and, though they'll fuse, they'll create someone that looks very odd and not get the desired power boost. So you can now see why I say this looks like a botched fusion dance between Kyurem and one of the other dragons). These Formes are called Black Kyurem and White Kyurem (guess which one is which):
(One thing I do notice that is interesting is that Black Kyurem is on the black background and White Kyurem is on the white background. Could this mean that the dragons are going to be in the version which matches their color!)
Okay, personal thought time...
WTF?!?!?
Okay, much like syrusfan said, I'll give GameFreak credit for coming up with something unique. We were expecting a third version and instead they pulled the rug from under us. However because of this and title of the games they are leaving pretty big questions which I think they should have given a tiny bit more information. The biggest one, which I addressed, being: Are these updated versions, remakes, or sequels? To clear any confusion on what I mean:
Updated Versions: This is what a third version usually is (small exception to Pokemon Yellow though in Japan that's a fourth version). This game essentially follows the same plot but put twists in the stories, adds additional content, expand roles of certain Legendary Pokemon, and try combining the different aspects of the previous two versions to make a game that doesn't feel like it's one game for the price of two.
Remakes: This is what FireRed, LeafGreen, HeartGold, and SoulSilver are. They're essentially the original game but have updated graphics and a ton of new features and even new locations.
Sequels: You can sort of say this is what Generation II/IV remakes (Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold, & SoulSilver) was to Generation I/III remakes (Red, Blue, Yellow, FireRed, & LeafGreen). The story of the previous games have already happened, there is now canon which may differ from what you may have done in those games (like catching the Legendary Pokemon). It's a fresh story that could take place right after or a few years ahead of the previous game, giving you control of a new character as you explore the once familiar region and seeing what changes have occurred due to the events in the previous game or of the passage of time if some have passed.
Now from what I said, I guess we can take Remake out as this game is going to be on the normal DS (hopefully they'll at least throw in some things you'll need the 3DS to take advantage of) so there won't be any graphical updates. So that just leaves Updated Version and Sequel and honestly I don't know which one their gonna choose. Obviously the story is going to heavily feature Kyurem and in my mind they can go either direction. However I can't help but also feel a bit disappointed as due to how different they made Pokemon Black and White from each other I, and I'm sure many others, were curious on how were they going to combine both themes into one game. Also I wanted to see the "complete dragon", Kyurem fused with both Zekrom and Reshiram, not two incomplete looking fusions.
Well, all we can do now is wait for more information, but in the meanwhile let's check out another announcement which seems to have gone by the wayside: Meloetta! That's right, the 15th movie won't only be revealing Keldeo but also Meloetta who will be in a short movie that'll appear before the movie called "Meloetta's Sparkling Recital". Could this mean that they'll be giving away two Event Legendaries for one movie?! Like with the above Pokemon Black 2 and White 2 announcement, we'll have to wait and find out.
(Bet you she's teaching everyone how to Teeter Dance, because these announcements are leaving us with confusion!)
Alright...that's...very interesting. They don't...look that bad, or I don't know. Didn't expect them to pull out two forms. Can't wait to see what exactly they're doing with this.
Also, a sequel would be amazing to see. Starting a new plot straight from when the protagonist becomes champion would be very awesome. Can't see how they'd redo the gyms in that instance, but still. And there's a chance of running into N and Ghetsis too, since they fled from capture.
Though I'm leaning more toward it being an updated version.
Also didn't expect them to release Meloetta so soon.

I hope it's two third versions. That would be awesome. Hell, as long as there are Gym Leaders rematches and better spread of wild pokemon and more post-game stuff I will be fine with two versions. |
I agree with that completely.
According to Serebii, Europe is getting it in Autumn.
Damn, Europe always gets everything first.
....Wait a minute...

NoA has confirmed a fall release for North America as well. |
Though, now this is awesome because i'm literally going to play five different kinds of RPGs in a year (well, Kingdom of Amalur is similar to Skyrim, but KoA is more action-y)

Now that I think about it, I think these might be third versions. Why else would they announce them just 3.5 months before release? Normally games are announced 8 to 9 months prior to release. |
But, i guess every one wants different things.
Isn't this the first time a main series Pokemon game has been released during the summer in Japan?

Yeah, that's why this is such a risky move, not helped by the fact we don't know whether this is a sequel (which if it is I'll accept splitting it into two games) or a typical third version upgrade (in which case I, and probably many others, will be upset). While it's true I wanted a third version which combined everything, if they're releasing two new versions the way they did then it has to be a sequel. However with that said I do also expect the usual third version additions: Battle Frontier, Gym Leader Rematches (this includes making the Striaton Gym Leaders a Triple/Rotation Battle and the Opelucid City Gym Leaders a Double Battle), and much more story explained (If you're going to give the Sages, Shadow Triad, Anthea, and Concordia unique sprites then at the very least give us more information about them!).
Though now I'm curious if they're gonna about a Ruby & Sapphire remake. Will they make it, would seem odd as that'll mean they'd be releasing 3 paired versions (6 games) this year for the main games (unless it's for the Gen III which will be just getting the one game via a Remake of Emerald).
Yeah, I was wondering why there was so little in-game backstory for the Team Plasma members, which I hope does get explored a little more in BW2. I'm really hoping it's a story continuation, as that's never been done before. I'm quite curious on how they would do that as then you would need to start off with stronger Pokemon or have a transfer system set up so that you can transfer some Pokemon from BW1 into the BW2, as if it's a direct continuation, I think the opponents you should fight should be much stronger than the opponents in BW1.

1. Honestly I think they should start you as a new character, leaves the whole messy "well what happened to my previous Pokemon?" question out plus that'll mean they could have the player characters be NPCs, maybe even some boss NPCS.
2. Oops, I meant this Generation. If they release a Ruby & Sapphire remake it'll mean 3 paired versions this generation (Black & White, Black 2 & White 2, Ruby & Sapphire Remake).
In my ideal world, where Pokemon Snap 2 is being considered for the 3DS, there would be two ways to start up a direct story-sequel for Pokemon:
A) You can upload predetermined data from BW1 to a wi-fi server and then download it in BW2, said data would be your team right after beating N (assuming that it's recorded, like how teams that beat the Elite 4 are)
B) Failing the above means you can start with the BW1 legendary (as in, starting up White 2 means you get Zekrom), pick a fully evolved starter and get 4 predetermined pokemon (some water, versions bird and psychic, and buffalant)
Of course, i have no idea if that's even possible.
Alternatively, maybe you just start as N? Get updated menus and all that stuff, maybe beat gym leaders and all as he tries to understand people, instead of team plasma stuff you uncover more stuff Ghetsis had planned, Kyurem shows up and shenanigans with your dragon happen, etc.
But, yeah, sheer speculation at this point, good thing that it was revealed now, though, by next Coro-Coro we will probably know a mini-van worth of how the games will work.
Huh, starting as N, didn't think of that. That would be great actually. That way you'd get rid of the whole messy starter situation and still challenge the gyms. Though not sure if they're going back to only having one gender to choose from again.
Black and White 2 are sequels. I repeat: Black and White 2 are sequels.
